Christmas is just around the corner, but luckily Santa (Xmas Kamen) arrived early! he brought me a very special gift indeed…
WACOM CINTIQ 12WX *unanimous admiration*
For those who don’t know what Wacom is, they produce graphic tablets for drawing, painting and whatever else on the computer. I have had a trusty Wacom Graphire 4 for 4 years now, and it is time for an upgrade.
Here is a comparison of my new and old tablet. The cintiq is a tablet-monitor built in one, so you draw directly on screen, like pencil and paper.
The Cintiq stylus is very evenly weighted, and feels great to hold, and has a much nicer grip material compared to my old Stylus.
The setup was rather complicated (for me at least), but i let Kamen do the hard work
So now i need to buy a screen protector, just to keep it in good condition for a long time, and hopefully i will be doing more illustrations now, and speaking of which, my Love Will Tear Us Apart illustration is in the Semi Permanent 2009 Melbourne edition book.
I’m on uni break now, but i am currently working on some freelance work, so i will still be updating this blog with general design work and other meanderings.

Today was the unofficial opening to my grad show (open to VIP and alumni), so i took some photos of my project to share.
I arrived at CoFA at 4:30pm, only to be told my poster has not been printed! So i frantically tried to get it up and running, and apparently the printers never recieved my file, then it couldn’t be opened, nevertheless, after some perseverence, i now have a very beautiful printed poster!
I will take some better photos tomorrow of everyone’s work. Tomorrow night is major opening to the public, hope to see you there!

THEY ARE FINISHED
after 17 painstaking weeks of developing templates and cutting, gluing and constructing these animals, theyre finally a family!
They all took an incredible amount of time to build, but i enjoyed it nonetheless.
Rabbit – 24hours
sheep – 30 hours
cat – 4 hours
whale – 20 hours
bear – 6 hours
elephant – 10 hours
big thankyou to kamen for helping me cut and build the whale
☻
This is the space i will be occupying at my grad show – we have an industrial theme complete with scaffolds, oildrums and pallets, after the exhibition CoFA will be knocked down and redeveloped.
I also recieved the stickers to go on the animals today, a big thankyou to David who donated the stickers to this project.

I have been spending alot of time at uni (until 1am when the security guard kicks me out), and i have made some progress, and as much as i would like to quickly assemble all my animals into wee hours of the morning, my rsi is taking over, and i do need to rest for a bit.
I have more or less finished the rabbit, with some adjustments still to be finalised, i have received an extension, so if i have the time, and enough cardboard i will rebuild the rabbit with a better internal structure, he’s a bit of a floppy bunny.

elephant: my bag is sitting on top to help weigh the head down, i have figured out a way to anchor it in place, but i havent tested it yet. There has been alot of problems i didnt anticipate while making the small prototypes, such as heavy heads and ears. I have been constructing support pyramids, and splinting with wood and metal for the rabbit.

elephant and bunny size comparison.

I am having the dilemma of finding a place to store these guys after the installation is complete, one friend has requested to keep the bunny, so if anyone else has some space to give these guys a home, let me know!

week 14: (one week to go!) i have started constructing my final animals, and it is taking alot longer than expected! I didn’t get a chance to start my animals earlier because i was having trouble locating my material. Thankfully, the good people at Dimension1 in Smithfield donated 40metres of card towards my project! Due to their size, i have to build them at uni, so i’ve been spending late nights on campus.

To give you an idea the scale of the bunny

The bunny ears were at first too light, and just flopped around everywhere, then i tried to reinforce it with corrugated cardboard, but that made it too heavy – so alas, i had no choice but to cut its ears off and try again
Hopefully i will have pictures of the final rabbit ready for tomorrow.

I’m using a projector to trace my templates onto the cardboard, not completely fool-proof, but it is working so far!

The Adventures of Jim the Sustainably-Challenged Designer

i thought this was an appropriate cynical post for the day – i feel much the same way about sustainability, and although the guilt is not enough to make me leave the design profession, i have taken a conscious effort to think about my eco-footprint.
My project attempts to use sustainable methods and materials, but by all means it is still leaving a mark on the planet. I have been doing some research about different recycled card, and i am still searching for the perfect 100% post-consumer waste recycled card to build my animals with. I’ve created many more animal models, i’ll try post some more photos soon when i refine the designs.
